” what’s the greatest lesson a woman should learn? that since day one, she’s already had everything she needs within herself. it’s the world that convinced her she did not. “

Have you ever felt like you’re a different person from day to day?

Some days, you wake up feeling like a champ and you can’t help but say aloud to yourself: “Today is going to be a great day!” You are filled with confidence and energy. You complete all of your tasks at work way before the deadline. Oh, and that cute guy whom you have a crush on seems to be extra smiley with you today. You smash out a great workout without breaking a sweat.

But then come days when you’re abruptly awoken by the dreadful sound of your alarm. Your body feels like it’s drained of energy over the night. You feel shitty and just want to forget the sad fact that you have to go to work today. You’re like a walking time bomb ready to explode at anyone or anything that make you feel the slightest annoyed. Working out feels like a chore and instead, you end up binging on a box of ice cream watching series until after midnight.

Does any of these sound familiar to you?

Believe it or not, these were my own experiences. It’s as if there are different people living inside of me and they take turn coming out each week. What I didn’t know at the time was that, there is a sound and scientific reason behind this sort of mood swing or personality split that almost all women experience each month. In fact, our brain chemistry can change up to 25% over the course of 30 days. Amazing, isn’t it?

The thing that is responsible for all these changes in our body and mind is called the infradian rhythm.

What is infradian rhythm?

There are three main biological rhythms or clocks that all living organisms from plant to human live by: circadian rhythm, infradian rhythm and ultradian rhythmsThe infradian rhythm is the one that is the most responsible for every woman’s sexual and reproductive health.

By definition, the infradian rhythm is any cycle that lasts for more than 24 hours, which mean it can be reset weekly, monthly or even seasonally. To put thing more in perspective for you, this clock is what regulates your monthly menstrual cycle. On the day when you experience your very first period, this monthly clock becomes activated and it will continue running until the day you reach menopause at about age 50.  If a man’s biological functions mainly follow the 24-hours circadian rhythms, us women, have to take into account the infradian clock as well if we want to be on our best game.

This powerful rhythm impacts directly and indirectly 6 major systems of our body naming: brain, metabolism, immune system, microbiome, stress response system and reproductive system. By understanding this biological clock, we, women can sync effectively with our monthly cycle which then allow us to enjoy all areas of our lives from career, relationship to sex and motherhood to the fullest.

As I mentioned earlier, our monthly cycle is tied to the infradian clock, which typically resets every 28 days. There are 4 distinct phases in each cycle – follicular, ovulatory, luteal and menstrual. Here is the length and what happens during each phase.

How regular and consistent your cycle is has a lot to do with your hormonal health. Unfortunately, women as young as 20 years old nowadays are suffering from hormonal issues more than ever. Hormones may seem insignificant to lots of people because… well, it’s no cancer. The only time women really care about their hormonal health is when they have acne or severe symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) during menstrual cycle. What they don’t realize is that hormones actually impact our lives in more ways than we know.

Produced by the endocrine system throughout the body, our hormones actually regulate and assist lots of our bodily functions such as metabolism, sex lives and even moods. When it comes to hormonal health, it’s all about balance. If the balance is disturbed for any reason, our health will be in trouble. The symptoms can range from acne to infertility.

One of the most recognized signs of hormonal imbalance in women is disruption in the menstrual cycle. This could appear as a missed period, PMS, irregular bleeding pattern or as severe as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Talk about PMS, I used to be and still sometimes am a victim of PMS myself: mood swings, food cravings and cramp among other things. You name it! Oh, the cramp was excruciating! I remember the first couple of day of the cycle, I would curl up in a ball in my bed clutching a blanket trying not to cry because I felt like something was trying to rip my stomach and my hips apart.

I was also one of those girls who would joke about PMS as if it’s an obvious part of life. But the truth is PMS can be avoided by eating, exercising and working according to your own infradian rhythm. In fact, people who are suffering from PMS have higher risk of having diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases so it’s definitely not something to joke about.

Hormonal imbalances is also the reason why you can’t control your eating behavior, why you keep gaining weight no matter what you do, and why all of your relationships are suffering from your roll-coaster of emotions.

Once you understand your own infradian rhythm and live according to it, you will find yourself become a much happier, calmer, and healthier person. Naturally, you will also be more productive in anything you do and more satisfied in your relationships. Best of all, for the first time, you will get to live a PMS-free life because your hormones are in balance.

Living a healthy lifestyle is not about expensive drugs and supplements or hours at some fancy gym, it’s essentially about tuning into our own body, pay attention and listen to it carefully, learning about your own patterns and live according to your biological rhythms.

For such a long time, women have been living according to the 24-hour rhythm without knowing that we are blessed with the second clock that provides us with unique gifts and strengths at different times of the month. If you want to know how to unlock these gifts and strengths, watch out for my next post!
